Welcome aboard, you are visitor |
JOSEPH
W. KRUSKO He was an Engine major while at the Kings Point
before being called in to service his country during World War II.
During the war he served on the freighter, SS ANGELINA.
The SS ANGELINA sailed from Liverpool, England to New York in
convoy ON-137. It strayed
from the convoy and heavy weather delayed its return to the convoy. Before it could return to the convoy it was struck by a
torpedo, fired by the German U-618 (Baberg).
Most of the fifty-five men on board abandoned ship into just three
lifeboats because all the others were destroyed by the blast.
Twenty minutes after the first blast another torpedo struck the
ship, causing another violent explosion, and washing the men out of the
lifeboats. Five hours after
the initial hit, the British vessel Bury rescued the rafts.
Only one officer, three men, and four armed guards survived the
attack. Joseph W. Krusko was
one of the heroes who died for his country on that day, October 18, 1942.
