BURTON C. BERGESON Burton C. Bergeson was aboard he SS John Winthrop on September 24, 1942 when the ship was torpedoed and shelled. While en route from Glasgow, Scotland to New York, the German submarine U-619 torpedoed the SS John Winthrop in the North Atlantic. The ship straggled from the convoy and was never seen or heard from again. Shortly thereafter, the U-619 was sunk in mid-Atlantic by the HMS Viscount on October 15, 1942. Of the 39 crew members and 15 Naval Armed Guards aboard, there were no survivors. Burton C. Bergeson was reported missing since September 19, 1942. |
