Cadet Benjamin H. Wilkinson was a Deck major aboard the SS John Morgan
when the ship collided with the SS Montana on June 1, 1943.
The SS Montana was inbound to Norfolk to join a convoy going to
Iceland. The SS Morgan was outbound
and as they approached each other with a routine port to port passing, when the SS
Morgan suddenly changed course to port and headed directly for the SS
Montana. The SS
Morgan collided with the SS Montana and their was an explosion as the
SS Morgan disintegrated killing all on board except for three Navy gun
crew.
