CHESTER E. KLEIN Cadet Chester E. Klein was an engine cadet aboard the SS Jonathan Sturges. She was returning from Liverpool on her way to New York when she was torpedoed. The SS Jonathan Sturges strayed away from the convoy and tried to go on to New York by themselves. She was struck on February 23, 1943. She was hit with two torpedoes in the number 2 hold by U-707. That was all it took and she went down. The master called abandon ship immediately after the attack, she went down bow first. There was a total of 36 initial survivors. Out of the initial 36, 13 died of exposure. It was not clear when or how Cadet Chester E. Klein died.
