Cadet Maher served on the liberty ship SS Meriwether Lewis. The Lewis was part of a convoy headed for the United Kingdom. Her cargo was ammunition and tires. Forty-four merchant crew and twenty-eight Naval Armed Guard were on board. The Lewis was falling behind on March 2, 1943. The German u-boat, U-634 Dalhaus, torpedoed the Meriwether Lewis. The Lewis sank with no survivors. The Coast Guard searched the area for two days. They only found a thirty-mile long line of tires.
