EDWARD J. GAVIN Edward J. Gavin was an engine cadet who lost his life on the SS Dorchester. The SS Dorchester was torpedoed by a German submarine U-223 (Wachter) at 0355 GCT on February 2, 1943. The ship was hit about 150 miles west of Cape Farewell, Greenland (59-22N/48-42W). The SS Dorchester was en route in convoy SG-19 from St. John's Newfoundland to Narsarssuak, Greenland. Holding 751 passengers, general cargo, lumber, and 60 bags of mail and parcel post, only 229 survived. All other 675 died, including Cadet Edward J. Gavin. |
