EDWIN HANZIK

Cadet Edwin Hanzik sailed aboard the SS William C. Gorgas.  He was a deck major.  Although Edwin was aware of the danger that his ship was in, he still pressed on doing his duties.  He was assisting the skipper and relaying orders.  His training had instilled in him the skills of courage and commitment to the Merchant Marine.  His dedication to duty kept him at his post till the moment the ship began to sink.  He saved a few shipmates lives by leading them to a lifeboat.  Cadet Hanzik was trained to work under pressure and did everything he knew possible to save the ship and his shipmates.  However, on March 11, 1942 Cadet Hanzik did all he could but that was not enough.  The ship was torpedoed and sunk leaving few survivors.  Cadet Hanzik was not one of them.
