EDWARD D. HOWARD
Cadet Edward D. Howard, a deck major, was onboard the liberty ship, SS
John L. Motely. The ship was
bombed with German aircraft around 1940 local time on December 2, 1943.
The ship was in Bari, Italy at the time and loaded with a cargo of
explosives and high- octane gasoline. The
Motely was struck with a bomb at the number 5 hatch, setting the deck
cargo and the cargo in the hold on fire. She
blew up when she was only 50 feet from the SS John Bascom.
The force of the explosion caved in the whole port side of the Bascom and
caused it to sink. Of the 45
merchant crewmembers and 28 Naval Guard, only 6 crewmembers and 4 navy men
returned.
