FRANCIS MILLER

The early morning sound of destruction was the beginning of the end for a particular cadet from the United States Merchant Marine Academy named Francis Miller. As a member of the crew aboard the SS Harry Luckenbach, Francis Miller was one of the 142 brave Midshipmen from the prestigious military academy, on the Long Island Sound, who sacrificed his life for the better of a nation. 0037 and the bombardment of two German torpedoes demolishes the starboard side of the ship and in a brief four minutes the ship is sunk. It was said that four life-boats made if off the ship. Searches were put out to find the survivors, but the crew of the SS Harry Luckenback was never to be heard from again.  Francis Miller and the rest of the crew were pronounced dead on March 17, 1943.
