FRANCIS B. TONE

    Cadet Francis B. Tone was an engine major aboard the SS Samuel J. Tilden.  The liberty ship was bombed by German aircraft at 1820 local time on December 2, 1943 while at port in Bari, Italy  with US and British military supplies.  She was a part of an operation to shuttle supplies and personnel between North Africa and Italy.  41 of her crew, including Tone, were killed in the assault.
