Cadet Gover P. Lietz was sailing aboard the liberty ship SS Jonathan Sturges during his sea year on February 23, 1943 at 2220 local time. The ship was en route from Liverpool, England to New York. The ship was hit by two torpedoes which were fired from the German U-boat U-707. Two life boats and four life rafts were launched. One met up with a life boat from another ship and was picked up on February 27. The other boat however was picked up 41 days later. Of the seventeen on this boat, only two crew and three armed guard survived. The German U-boat U-707 was sunk off of the Azores on November 9, 1943. |
