GEORGE C. MILLER JR.

   George C. Miller Jr. was a deck cade aboard the SS Wade Hampton.  This liberty ship was torpedoed by the German submarine U-405 (Hopmann) at 2030 GCT on February 28, 1943, while en route in Convoy HX-227 from New York to Murmansk, Russia.  250 miles east of Cape Farewell, Greenland with about 8,000 tons of general cargo, including explosives.  Four crew, including Cadet Miller were lost along with five Navy men.
