HERMAN G. GARRISTEN

     Herman G. Garristen died before his time.  He perished along with many others in World War II.  What makes Garristen special is the fact that he was cadet of the United States Merchant Marine Academy.  He is one of 142 cadets to have died in World War II. 

     He was on the liberty ship SS William Clark the ship was torpedoed by a German sub at 1235 on November 4, 1942  en route to Russia.   It took the ship 25 minutes to sink so most of the crew made it out accept five people in the engine room.  One of the lifeboats was lost and the other was found.
