HOWARD T. McGRATH Cadet Howard T. McGrath sailed on the SS James Sprunt, a Liberty Ship during WWII. She was torpedoed on her maiden voyage on March 10, 1943 by a German Submarine, while heading to Karachi, India from Charleston, South Carolina. She was carrying a full cargo of explosives and when she was hit the sky lit up and the disintegrating ship could be seen as far as 40 miles away. Out of 43 crewmembers and 28 Naval Armed Guards there were no survivors. She sank off of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. On August 30, 1943 the Submarine that caused such devastation was sunk in the Mid Atlantic by aircraft.
