IRWIN S. EBEL

            Irwin S. Edel was a midshipman at the United States Merchant Marine Academy majoring in Engine when the US government called upon him to serve on the SS Heredia during WWII.  The SS Heredia was under the direction Erwin Colburn, the captain, when it was hit portside two times by the German submarine, U-506, on May 19,1942.  The ship sank two miles south of the Louisiana coast.  There were twenty-three survivors.  The United Emit Company in Boston Massachusetts owned the SS Heredia.
