JOHN W. ARTIST

John W. Artist served on the Victory tanker SS Saint Mihiel. The Mihiel was a T-2 tanker.

The T-2 was considered the workhorse of the tanker fleet because T-2s supplied 80% of the fuel used by bombers, tanks, jeeps, and ships during the War. Their importance gained them unwanted attention by German U-Boats off our Atlantic Seaboard. The Germans concentrated their U-Boats on the tanker fleet knowing how essential fuel was to the war effort.

The Mihiel was sunk on the 9th of April in 1945 by suffering a collision in battle and was set ablaze.
