JOHN M. CARTER

John M. Carter was an engine major at the Merchant Marine Academy. He spent his sea year on the SS Esso Gettysburg. The steam ship was travel in the North Atlantic when it experienced heavy ice and rain. The men tried to deal with the ice and snow as much as they could but there was too much. The accumulation of ice and snow on the bow and stern caused the ship to break down the middle. The ship sank so fast that the crew had little time to get off the ship and perished.
