JOSEPH GIOVINCO

A deck cadet, Joseph Giovinco died on Decemeber 9, 1942 on the SS COAMO. After leaving Gilbralter on November 26, 1942 in convoy MFK-3, on December 1, 1942, while off Lands End, detached from convoy by orders of British admiralty, the ship was underway to New York independently. However, it proved as a flaw in decisions when the very vulnerable ship was torpedoed by a German sub, U-604 (Holtrin) at 1818 GCT off Bermuda. The loss of the SS COAMO was the greatest lost of a merchant crew on any US Flag Merchant vessel during World War II, with the loss of 133 passengers and crew.
