JAMES V. ROWLEY

James V. Rowley was a cadet of the United States Merchant Marine Academy.  He was studying to major in marine transportation.  During his sea year in 1943, he served aboard the SS James Sprunt.  His ship was torpedoed on her maiden voyage by the German submarineU-185 at 0810 on March 10, 1943.  That morning after the attack there was a tremendous explosion.  So big in fact, that one ship saw it from forty miles away.  The entire ship simply disintegrated into thin air.  The cargo that they were carrying was full of explosives.  Her crew included 43 members in addition to 28 Naval Armed Guard.  The explosion left no survivors.
