JOHNATHAN F. STURGES Cadet Johnathan F. Sturges was an engine major aboard the SS John Withrop. While en route from Glasgow, Scotland to New York, the German submarine U-619 torpedoed the SS John Winthrop in the North Atlantic on September 19, 1942. The ship straggled from the convoy and was never seen or heard from again. Shortly thereafter, the U-619 was sunk in mid-Atlantic by the HMS Viscount on October 15, 1942. Of the 39 crew members and 15 Naval Armed Guards aboard, there were no survivors. |
