TUCEK JR.
Cadet John P. Tucek Jr. was a
Transportation major serving aboard the liberty ship, SS James Sprunt. The ship was located southeast of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba
about 7 miles off shore, while in route from Charleston, SC to Karachi, India
via Key West and the Panama Canal. The
SS James Sprunt was part of Convoy KG-123 carrying a full cargo of
explosives. She was complemented
with 43 crewmembers and 28 Naval Armed Guard.
A torpedo hit the ship on her maiden voyage by the German Sub U-185 at
0810 GCT on March 10, 1943. There
were no survivors. The German
Submarine U-185 was sunk in Mid-Atlantic on August 30, 1043 by aircraft from USS
Core (CVE-13). A witness to the
torpedo attack said, “At 0810 GCT, there was a tremendous explosion which lit
up the sky. The glare was seen by
from our ship 40 miles away. The
ship simply disintegrated.”
