Cadet Lee T. Byrd shipped aboard the SS Harry Luckenbach from New York to
England as a deck cadet where he learned under Master Ralph McKinnon.
On March 17, 1943 off the coast of Greenland, German Sub U-91 fired to
torpedoes at the convoy in which the Harry Luckenbach was traveling in and sunk
her in four minutes. All hands were
lost when she sunk.
