MICHAEL BUCK JR.

 Michael Buck Jr. Died on March 3 1943 while the SS James Sprunt was being attacked. The liberty ship SS James Sprunt was en route from Charleston, South Carolina to Karachi, India via Key west and the Panama Canal. She was with convoy KG-123 and had a full cargo of explosives. Her compliment was 43 crewmembers and 28 Naval Armed Guard. On March 10, 1943 the SS James Sprunt was southeast of Guantanamo bay Cuba about seven miles off shore when she was struck by a torpedo from a German Submarine, U-185 (Maus) around 0810. The torpedo caused the cargo to explode, and the explosion was seen by a ship that was 40 miles away. The ship just disintegrated, and no one survived. The German submarine U-185 (Maus) was sunk in the Mid-Atlantic on August 30, 1943 by aircraft from the USS Core.
