MEYER EGANTHAL Cadet Meyer Eganthal was aboard the freighter ship, SS Sawokla when it was shelled and torpedoed by the German Raider. The ship was carrying a cargo of Jute and gunnies with 41 crew members, 13 Naval Armed Guards and 5 passengers. The first assault on the ship destroyed the bridge killed the Captain and two seamen. The second bombardment struck the engine room, the radio shack and the boat deck. Then a torpedo struck her. A second one was fired but missed. The SS Sawokla went down in eight minutes. It was so quick there was no time for defensive actions to be taken. Sixteen crewmembers including the captain, 4 of the Navy gun crew were killed. Thirteen seamen and nine Navy men were taken as prisoners. The German Raider was sunk on October 17, 1943 near Tokyo Bay by the USS Tarpon. |
