MAXWELL HOLLANDER

The brave cadet Maxwell Hollander was onboard the ship SS Rosario on February 21, 1943.  Little did he know that German U boats would torpedo his ship that night at 2035.  Unfortunately he lost his life along with 30 of his crewmates.  What makes Hollander special is that he was a college student attending the United States Merchant Marine Academy.  No other U.S. Academy sends its students into harms way.  This young man gave his life for his country.  There is no other death more honorable.

Unfortunately Hollander really didn’t have a chance, his ship capsized 3 minutes after torpedoes struck it.  The rafts were jammed in the racks from distortion caused by explosives.  Also the ship went down 550 miles west of Ireland in the icy north Atlantic. Hollander contributed the greatest thing he could, his life.
