OTto E. Kern
served on the Liberty Ship SS Richard Henry Lee as a deck cadet.
His vessel was apart of the cold and
deadly Murmansk Run voyage. The disaster that occurred in July of 1942 when a
allied convoy known as the PQ17, made up of 55 sea-faring vessels, carrying $700
million worth of military cargo from Iceland to Murmansk, Russia was massacred
by German U-Boats and battleships.
Cadet Otto’s vessel survived the massacre and unfortanetly was later mined off
the shore of Africa on November 18th 1942.
