PETER N. CHUNOSOFF Cadet Peter N. Chunosoff was a deck cadet aboard the SS Alcoa Pilgrim. The ship was struck by a torpedo at 0100 CGT on May 28, 1942 in the engine room on the starboard side. The torpedo was launched by the U-558 (Krech). This caused the ship to sink faster than a distress could get out. Nor were the liferafts launced. Nine survivors got aboard two liferafts that were set free and picked up at 2000 on June 2 by the SS Thomas Nelson. . The U-558 was later sunk by a B-24 Liberator in the Bay of Biscay on July 20, 1943 |
