ROBERT J. DERICK
On August 19, 1943, engine cadet Robert J. Derick was on the SS J. Pinckney
Henderson, a 7176 gross ton liberty
ship, when it collided with the Panamanian flag Tanker J. H. Senior. The vessals were part of convoy HX-252, which was bound from
New York to Liverpool. The SS J.
Pinckney Henderson was carrying a cargo ofMagnesium, glycerine, resin, oil, and
wax. The cargo could not have been
a worse combiniation; the resulting fire reduced a crew of forty merchant seamen
and twenty-seven navy guards to four. Only
two seaman and two navy guardsmen survived.
Out of the crew on the J.H. Senior, only six navy guardsmen survived.
