RICHARD B.
GLAUCHE
Richard
B. Glauche was serving onboard the SS John Harvey as a deck cadet when it
was attacked by Germans on December 2, 1943. The ship was anchored at Bari, Italy. At approximately 1930 while moored alongside the SS Joseph
Wheeler and SS John L. Motley, a German U-boat fired torpedos at the
ships. Although she was not hit
directly, flaming debris from other ships hit her and caused her to go up in
flames. The flames eventually
burned the mooring lines and the SS John Harvey drifted into the harbor
and exploded. At the time she was
carrying 8,000 tons of ammunition, a portion of which was mustard gas.
Tragically, the mustard gas affected much of the surrounding area,
causing many sicknesses and deaths. In
the end only six crew members and one Merchant Marine Academy cadet survived.
Mr. Glauche unfortunately lost his life while fulfilling his duties
onboard the SS John Harvey.
