RICHARD RECORD

Cadet Richard Record sailed for the South Atlantic Steam Ship Co of Savannah, GA.  Richard was an Engineer who sailed with 43 merchants, 26 naval armed guard, and 4 enlisted as passengers.  The Liberty Ship was en route in convoy HX-229 from NY to Liverpool, England with cargo of steal, cotton, foodstuffs, deck cargo planes, tractors, and trucks.  While underway the Liberty Ship was torpedoed by the German sub (Manseck) U-758 at 2324 on March 16,1943 in the Mid Atlantic.  The torpedo struck the #1 hold causing a fire in the #1 hold, but the fire was put out in only 15 minutes.  After the fire was put out 43 of the crew had already abandoned ship against orders.

The Liberty Ship set a new course to St. Johns, Newfoundland and encountered another sub. It was an U-91 named the Walkerling.  The sub fired three torpedoes and two made a direct hit.  One torpedo hit the mid section and the second torpedo struck the stern.  The Liberty Ship was unable to stay afloat and went down on March 17, 1943 at 0739.  Along with the ship were the remaining crew including Cadet Richard Record.
