ROBERT C. VANCURE

Cadet Robert C. Vancure was an Engine major serving aboard the SS Louise Lykes; a ship carrying war supplies.  Aboard the ship were 30 crewmembers, 24 Naval Armed Guard, and 10 U.S. Army personnel. The German Sub U-384 torpedoed the freighter, SS Louise Lykes, on January 9, 1943.  The ship sunk in the North Atlantic while in route from New York to Belfast, Northern Ireland.  There were no survivors and the crew was never seen again.  The information obtained from German records showed that this ship put up a terrific battle and almost sank the sub.  The U-384 was bombed and sunk southwest of Iceland on March 19, 1943.
