SAMUEL T. TYLER
Samuel T. Tyler, majoring in deck at the United States Merchant Marine Academy was called upon to serve his country in WWII. Tyler was to serve on the SS Dorchester. The Merchants and Miner Transportation Company in Baltimore, Maryland owned the SS Dorchester; its captain was Hans Jorgen Danielson, who was last at sea. The ship was hit starboard side by the German submarine, U-223 Wachter, and was abandoned at 0358 hundred hours, on February 3, 1943 near Farewell, Greenland. Later the USCG ship Eslanaba picked up 56 survivors from 6 lifeboats; Samuel T. Tyler was not one of those survivors. |
