WILLIAM H. GREEN JR.
William H. Green was a cadet of the United States Merchant Marine Academy
during the time of World War II. He
was studying for a major in Marine transportation.
He was aboard the SS Samuel Heintzelman during his sea year in
1943. His ship was torpedoed by a
German submarine U-511, (Schneewind) on July 9, 1943.
The only report of what happened to the ship was from a crewmember of the
U-511. The sub went down after the firing of the torpedoes and they
heard underwater explosions. When
they resurfaced, there was no sign of the ship or survivors.
The only scrap remaining was found washed up on shore on September 30,
1943. There were only a couple of
glass tubes with gun powder, some ammunition boxes, and a plank marked SS
Samuel Heintzelman remaining.
