WILLIAM LINDE

Cadet William Linde was an engineering major aboard the SS Jeremiah Van Rennselaer. At 0320 GCT on February 2 1942 SS Jeremiah Van Rennselaer was hit by three torpedoes ripping her hull open. The engine was secured in two minutes. The crew abandoned ship hurriedly causing the loss of two boats. Only one was launched successfully. One man remained on board and was rescued by escort boats that sunk the vessel with gunfire at 1700 the same day.
